A Red Silk Thread

Synopsis:

In the Imperial Palace of Chang’an sits Princess Hua at her carving desk working on another figurine. It’s been ten years of boredom and monotony. Reading from the palace library, creating her little statues, and playing ball with little Xiaosheng (her only bright light).

Her father offered her up to the Han dynasty as a gift to keep his government position. At one time, she desired this. She had a crush on the handsome Prince Qian, another gift to the Imperial family. Now, here they were, husband and wife. But he was more like a brother to her.

In Rome, Alexander, one of Emperor Augustus’s palace guards, is struggling between his grief over the loss of his family and the romantic entanglements he finds himself in.

The Chinese Emperor has decreed that the princess and her husband will be envoys to that other empire far to the west. Hua could not be more happy. Finally! An escape from these suffocating walls!

Their guides have warned them that the journey is perilous. Many dangers await.

But the most dangerous will be found in each other’s eyes. Love.

Official Book Trailer

“…a richly layered, emotionally resonant story that lingered long after the final page—a novel that understands how fragile human connections can be when stretched across empires.” – The Coffee Pot Book Club

“When Emperor Chengdi of the Han dynasty orders an envoy to travel to Rome to establish a trade agreement between the two dominions, a young couple, Prince Liu Qian and Princess Huang Hua, are picked for the task. Forced into her position and marriage to Prince Liu Qian by Chinese customs, Princess Huang Hua viewed their union as a duty, feeling respect rather than love for the prince. When the envoy arrives in Rome, the princess meets Alexander Severus, a guard in Emperor Augustus’s palace, and it is not long before they fall head over heels for each other. Princess Huang Hua is not only bound to her land by cultural obligations, but is also a married woman and destined to be the next empress of the Han dynasty. Can she throw it all away for life with a Roman soldier?…This page-turner will grab you and only loosen its grip after the final word. If you’re looking for a historical romance flavored with drama, suspense, and adventure in a tale of forbidden love, duty, and fate, A Red Silk Thread…is a must-read. Kunkel is a master of the art of narration. Reading the book felt like going on a grand trip back in time to the era of the Roman and Chinese emperors Augustus and Chengdi. The cinematic depictions captured the scenes with vivid colors. I was introduced to diverse and sharply contrasting cultures, architecture, and landscapes from the Imperial Palace in China to the bustling metropolis of Rome, including Egypt and the pirate-infested waters of the Red Sea. The cast is fascinating, and the dynamic conversations and internal monologues reveal their personalities and emotions. I loved this story.” – Keith Mbuya, Readers’ Favorite

“…a sweeping novel…artfully brings to life the two…rich, vividly contrasting cultures and histories…wonderfully absorbing…captivating…solidly researched and engrossing…an ambitious novel that immerses readers in the worlds of Ancient Rome and China through a highly readable, enjoyable, and suspenseful historical romance.” – The Book Review Directory

“An action-filled historical drama with a dash of romance…the atmosphere of the novel is fun with great detail put into the Roman and Chinese cultures, especially with their fashion choices. The descriptions of Hua’s outfits, especially along with those of the Roman leaders, add to the artistic aspects of the novel…All of it adds a richness to the novel’s atmosphere…a compelling historical drama…The scenes between Hua and Alexander are sweet and their points of view reveal the grief and conflict both must reckon with to get what they really want.” – The Independent Book Review

“…a historical romance replete with dynamic characters and a strong story structure…The author’s methodical approach effectively establishes fully realized relationships…an engaging mix of action and romance. A well-crafted historical epic with a vibrant cast.” – Kirkus Reviews
